Work — What is our real purpose?

By T4C Board Member Ed Gill

Colossians 3:23 & 24“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as your reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

This scripture concludes a set of instructions for living. Reading the whole chapter clarifies its purpose. I encourage us all to take the time to read it often.

In this world where success is measured by production, recognition, and compensation, it is easy for us to lose track of why we work in the first place, and yes, that includes me.

As I studied these verses and prepared to write this, sections of them stood out, prompting reflection and evaluation of my concept of work. I found them challenging, and I want to share a few.

Equal value: Paul made this all-encompassing with “Whatever you do”, and I am sure that was deliberate. It made me stop ranking my tasks by their rewards and treat each as important. To see every task as important, even and probably especially those I don’t like doing, and to give each my full attention and effort.

Gratitude: I know that everything good is from the Lord, and even though my job doesn’t always go as I would have it, it is a gift and should be treated as such. God is in control, and we are where we are, by design.

Perspective: “It is the Lord Christ we are serving.” That is a paradigm shift I need to keep. Keeping in mind my job is to seek the kingdom first and leave the rest to Him.

Application Tools:

Gratitude: Start each day with thanks to God for the work we have. Asking for His guidance and for His help in keeping the right perspective, energy, and attitude.

Intentionality: Start each day, dedicating your work to God, no matter what is on the to-do list.

Humble Servant: No matter what our title or position. Remembering the example, we were given with the basin and the towel.

Prayer: Father God, we thank You for all Your gifts, including our breath. We admit we can lose focus on our purpose and ask for Your guidance to help us become who You intend us to be and reflect You more each day.

Ministry Partnerships

The Filter Project

Trades for Christ is excited to announce our partnership with The Filter Project to make a lasting impact both physically and spiritually.
A portion of the funds raised by Trades for Christ will directly support The Filter Project’s mission to reach the unreached.

Today, at least one billion people worldwide have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Filter Project addresses this need by providing two life-changing gifts: the message of God’s love through the Gospel of Christ, and access to clean, safe drinking water through long-lasting water filters. These filters not only meet an immediate physical need, but also open the door to ongoing relationships with families, creating opportunities to nurture new faith and lasting discipleship. Through this partnership, Trades for Christ is helping bring hope, health, and the love of Christ to communities around the world.

Enterprise Stewardship

Trades for Christ is partnering with Enterprise Stewardship to help businesses operate with greater purpose and impact.

Enterprise Stewardship partners with teams to maximize Economic, Social, and Spiritual profit by equipping them with a comprehensive Stewardship System that creates Purpose Driven Profit. Through a strategic business assessment, Enterprise Stewardship helps identify each organization’s greatest strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities, empowering leaders to steward their businesses in a way that honors God, serves people well, and achieves sustainable growth. Together, Trades for Christ and Enterprise Stewardship are committed to helping businesses thrive while making a meaningful Kingdom impact.
